My name is Anita Atu, my skin is Gutjan, I am a Dhalwangu, because my father was adopted into the Dhalwangu clan, then I became a Dhalwangu person. My homeland is Gurrumuru and I speak Djambarrpuyngu, my mothers language.
I learned to weave with gunga when I was seventeen years old. And it was aunt Mavis Warrnggilnga that taught me, at Badarr, where she lived then. I would sit and watch her weave at first. I kept the skills I had observed, but it was my mother Dorothy Wirritjwirritj Dhamarrandji who taught me to actually weaving and also the dying process, and my favourites that I like to make are table mats and earrings. During those times, I was just helping my aunt and mother, and that’s how I got the skills. Now I do it all on my own.
