My name is Margaret Dhorrpuy Munyarrun, and I live at Dhambala Homeland, approximately 5km from Galiwin’ku town on Elcho Island with my husband, Richard Gandhuwuy. We have five children.

My motherland country is Rorruwuy homeland. I work at Elcho Island Arts as a casual Arts Worker. Prior to working at the art centre, I worked for many years as a Teacher’s Assistant at Shepherdson College in Galiwin’ku.

I enjoy sharing information and stories to the regular groups of student visitors at Elcho Island Arts. I am a member of Galiwin’ku Women’s Space. I enjoy weaving and making jewellery from natural materials, having learned from my mother as well as Mavis Ganambarr, Ruth Lulwarriwuy and Helen Gatjikin.

In 2011 I attended a workshop with Sean Smith where I began experimenting with contemporary painting. I like to paint about daily life on Elcho Island, especially Pandanas collecting and hunting trips.

In 2013 I began learning the skills of carving small sculptures, as well as soft sculpture weavings from fellow artist, Judy Manany.

Margaret has attended many workshops including a jewellery making workshop with Alice Whish, Etching workshop with Sean Smith and in 2021 Margaret attended a woodblock workshop with Basil Hall.

In 2022 Margaret’s work was selected from textile workshops here on the island, to be made into a limited run of fabrics.
